Why Don't You "Like" Church??

I recently started a Facebook page for the church we attend. While the majority of the "movers and shakers" within the parish are over 60, it's no reason for us to be stuck in the pre-techno age. How else can we expect to garner attention from the younger people, the people who will make the difference between keeping our doors open or closed?

Unfortunately, besides announcing our FB page in the bulletin and posting signs in the church, I don't know how else to let the youth know about it.

Every day, during the week, I post anything I can think of: a quote, a prayer, a Scripture passage, news about what's going on in the parish, the saint of the day...  It's one of my contributions to the parish. One of the ways in which I can tell people which articles, quotes, Bible passages, etc. mean something to me. It's a way for me to reach out and say, "St. Pat's cares."

I have to be careful, of course. I'm posting on behalf of St. Pat's, not myself. I try to not choose anything too controversial or over the top. Like the church sign I found on Pinterest that said, "Staying in bed on Sundays and shouting 'Oh God' does not constitute going to church." Funny, but perhaps a bit too much for some parishioners.

So far we have 14 people who have "Liked" St. Pat's page. It's a bit discouraging but like most people tell me, it's 14 more than when we started. It's also discouraging when no one comments or "Likes" any of the things I post. Actually, now there are two women who regularly "Like" my posts, so that's something.

How can we get young people to get involved? How do we get young people to care? How do we relay the message that going to church doesn't have to be boring and that being active within the church isn't a punishment? That having a church family is a wonderful thing.

I just don't know.
