This morning my dad called me to tell me my email account had been hacked. My heart sinking, I went to my laptop to see for myself. Sure enough, I had unknowingly spammed a bunch of people on my mailing list. I quickly changed my password and sent an email of apology out to everyone. One friend replied, "I figured you were hacked. I didn't think you would be sending me sex tips!" How embarrassing. I haven't cleaned up my addresses in such a long time that people I haven't spoken with in years may now have received spam from me. Great way to say, "Hey! It's been awhile! Remember me?" I also had professors from university, fellow church members, work colleagues... Again, how embarrassing.
Why do people hack? Are they really trying to sell something? Are they in such desperate need that they would violate my privacy to do so? Or is it all some kind of joke to them? Let's see if we can get past someone's line of defense, their password? I just feel...sullied.
