Interviewing 101

Reason #193587 why I am not and will never be the CEO of a major corporation: I hate the interviewing process (never mind firing!).

Yesterday hubby and I met with a babysitter we found on a nanny agency website. It's what I imagine a dating website would look like. You put in what you're looking for (nanny, sitter, caregiver, etc.), how far away from your area (in kms), non-smoker, experience with your child's age group, background check, good with pets, can swim, etc. etc. The options are endless. Then you go through the list that has been generated for you, read through their profiles and if you like someone, send them a message.

We had found a babysitter months before but then she got pregnant and eventually it was too close to her due date for her to babysit. It was easy with her because out of the three women we sent messages to (I have never seen a man on this site), she was the only one who responded. She came to the house so we could meet her and so she could meet Jr but really, we knew she was it (barring of course, any obvious warning signs or alarms going off in our heads).

This time, however, two women got back to us within minutes of each other. One is 19 just finishing CEGEP and the other is 25 who just received her education degree but can't find a permanent job teaching at the elementary level. So she subs during the day and just started to babysit at night.

I'm kind of ageist because right off the bat I'm drawn toward the 25 year old. She's still young enough that she doesn't charge $20/hr like some older sitters I've seen but she's old enough that she a) doesn't live with her parents anymore (= smart, independent, mature) b) has her driver's license and her own car and more importantly c) has more maturity than a 19 year old. I know it's not guaranteed but it's most likely true. Six years makes a huge difference.

Last night we met with the 25 year old, whom we shall call NB because she's originally from New Brunswick. As soon as I found this out, and the fact that she went to StFX (where I received my diploma in lay ministry), and the fact that she has freckles like me, and that she had her CV ready along with a list of questions for us, well, I was sold.

Like I said, yet another reason why I'll never manage a huge company. It doesn't take much to woo me over.

Anyway, she was super polite and nice and someone I could see hanging out with. I mean, if you know yourself and trust your instincts and the vibes you get off of people, go with it, right?

Just the same, hubby said we should still meet with the 19 year old. Who by the way did not ask me for our address. I realized when we set the date and time to meet I didn't give it and she never asked for it. So I sent it to her in a separate email. To which she has not replied. I'm just saying.

We're meeting her tonight so I'll let you know how it goes.
