I don't know what I was thinking, buying a Stephen King book.
Sometimes, when I don't have anything to read and I don't feel like rereading something I already own, I'll pick up a cheap paperback at the grocery store. It's easier than going to Chapters or some other bookstore since we actually need groceries and it's just one more thing to throw in the cart. I feel guilty going to a bookstore just to buy books for myself. I'm something of a speed reader so it feels wrong to pay money for something I'll finish in a week or less depending how good it is.
Anyhow, I saw the Stephen King book, Full Dark, No Stars and I figured what the heck. I have read a few of his books like Misery and It and while I didn't love them, they weren't bad, either.
Did I mention I read before going to bed?
What on earth would possess me to read a book by the king of horror right before bedtime?
I don't know.
This particular book is actually a collection of three short stories. The first story was disturbing with much attention to detail... particularly details of the bloodbath variety. The ending was the kind that clarified what was really going on (was he crazy or was it really happening??) but the truth didn't make you feel any better. It made you feel kind of sick.
The second story was about rape so right away it leaves a yucky feeling in your stomach. And the thing about a horror story is that you know there's the distinct possibility (let's face it, the 99.9% possibility) that the ending won't be pretty.
I have yet to finish the third story but I can tell already it's going to be a doozy.
And all this, floating around in my mind right before I drift off to sleep! All of this... roiling around in my subconscious, all night.
Kudos to you, Stephen King. Full Dark, No Stars indeed.
It was a revelation to me when I realized I could download books straight to my iPad. Many of the kindle editions are well-priced, and most let you download a sample chapter for free!
ReplyDeleteTrue! I've always found it difficult reading long documents off of the computer; I've always printed them out. I guess I assume it'll feel the same way with the iPad but I should definitely give it a try.
