Last night Jr. had her first mishap in the bathtub. Both my hubby and I were sitting beside the tub when she suddenly fell over (away from us) and smacked her head against the side of the tub. I grabbed her as fast as I could (which didn't feel fast enough!) and brought her to my chest. She was wailing, of course, but it didn't last long. She did, however, have a big red goose egg on her forehead! We felt awful. I put her back in the tub when she stopped crying and she was fine. She just wanted to continue playing in the bubbles (thank you to Gramma for the lavender bubble bath). She couldn't figure them out; they looked like you could pick them but when she did they slipped through her fingers. So then she tried eating them. That didn't go so well either but she wasn't fazed by the taste. Anyway, as she splashed in the water, hubby held onto her, terrified she would do it again. We were both so shaken by the entire ordeal but didn't want Jr. to catch on, which is why we didn't take her out of the tub after it happened. While hubby stayed with her, I checked in our go-to book about what we should do. Since she didn't lose consciousness, didn't vomit, didn't have bruising underneath her eyes, she was fine. The book recommend putting a cold washcloth on the bump and that's it. We still felt like horrible parents anyway.
Rereading this it sounds like we overreacted a bit trust me when I tell you the sound of your child getting hurt, the tears your child sheds when they're hurt, the scratch/bump/bruise/cut they received... it's a terrible feeling. I know it won't be the last time and I know that I have to toughen up but just the same I hope it never happens again!
