For the first time in history, the president of the US has spoken in favor of gay marriage. It's about bloody time. It's kind of crazy that there have been homosexuals since the beginning of time and it's only recently becoming socially acceptable... in some circles.
My parents taught me to see people, not color or religion or sexual orientation (this is how they ended up with children-in-law from various cultures. We're our own mini United Nations.) People are people. People love and people need love. It baffles me to think that people are worried about the institution of marriage -- the sanctity of marriage -- when the statistics show that about 50% of all marriages end in divorce. And gay marriage is going to what, make it worse somehow?
And the whole "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve" thing? Ridiculous. God could have just as easily pulled a rib from Adam to make Steve just as well as he did to make Eve. The whole point of man and woman marriage way back then was to propagate the species. Today? Not so much. We're OVER populated. Do we really believe that humanity is going to get snuffed out by a man and a man getting married?? Or that a gay union is somehow less whole, less complete because they can't have biological children?? What about all the hetero couples out there who suffer from infertility or those who have decided not to have children? Are they somehow less whole, less complete as a married couple??
I've heard people say homosexuality is really just experimenting or some form of rebellion. Well, when I think about the umpteen stories of gay teenagers getting beat up or committing suicide because of bullying, these ridiculous concoctions don't make any sense. And what about the gay couples who have been together for decades? That's one long experiment!
I've heard people say homosexuality is a disease, like depression. Well, they've discovered pills and psychotherapy to help people cope with depression. I don't see anyone touting an anti-gay pill that will help people "cope" with being gay and I haven't heard anyone say going to therapy has solved their gay "issue". It seems to me all the methods people have tried over the years, including horrific things like shock therapy, haven't worked. And they haven't worked because NOTHING'S BROKEN.
I believe that you're born with a certain sexual orientation, much like skin color or hair color. You can try to hide it, by tanning or dying your hair or pretending to be straight, but that doesn't change the reality of who you are.
Unfortunately, since we're STILL dealing with racism, something we've been dealing with since time immemorial, it looks as though gay rights still have a very long road to hoe.
