Succumbing to Facebook

Well, we've succumbed to the social networking giant that is Facebook. As I've mentioned in a previous post, I wasn't keen on the idea of posting photos of my daughter. Moreover, I didn't want to reconnect with friends from high school or random people from my past. I do (or I should now say "did") visit my sister's Facebook page from time to time to see what my family was up to. Between hubby's family and my family, there are over 30 of them on Facebook. They post photos, share what's going on in their lives, as well as all the random stuff in between. It's a great way to keep in touch, particularly when my extended family lives out West and we see each other at best once a year. Visiting my sister's page seemed like the perfect solution: as one of my cousins put it, I get to stalk everyone while no one gets to stalk me. There was just one hiccup: Jr. My other sister, Malt_Soda, has a daughter, Jelly Bean, that is 5 weeks older than Jr. MS often posts photos and videos of JB and family and friends inevitably comment on how cute she is or how big she's gotten. It made me sad that those family members weren't seeing Jr. grow up in the same way. It's not that I didn't want to share these things with family, it's just that I didn't want to do any of the other stuff on Facebook. So hubby and I discussed the matter. With the privacy features in Facebook, we can control who sees these photos and videos. We would open the account in her name because, after all, it was for her and about her. We would only add family members and close friends. I couldn't believe how quickly Jr. accumulated friends! Within 5 minutes she had 10; this morning she has 26 and we still haven't heard back from all the people we sent "friend requests" to. I always knew she'd be popular!

There's a lot of bad stuff that's come of the internet and creations like Facebook and Twitter. But there's a lot of good stuff too. These things or these types of things, will never go away. This isn't some fad. People want to be connected. People want to chat. People want to use the internet. So rather than try to avoid or shun them in their entirety, I think it smarter to try to use them responsibly and how I think best. That's what we're doing, to the best of our abilities.
