Day Twenty: How Important I Think Education Is

Day 20 of the 30 Day Challenge

Day Twenty: How Important I Think Education Is

Please pray for me, send happy thoughts my way, or come and babysit! I put my daughter down to sleep almost 45 minutes ago and she is still screaming in her crib. She was tired and cranky so I decided, down you go! But she screamed so I said, "Okay, I'll help you relax by rocking you to sleep." No dice. She screamed. So I thought, Maybe if I just put her to bed, let her scream a bit, come back in after washing the dishes, she'll be ready to receive her soother and her little frog and go to sleep. HA! She screamed even more! So every 5-10 minutes I've been going in, re-swaddling her because she's wiggled her way out, place her back into position because she's managed to turn onto her stomach and wedge herself into a corner, replace the soother because of course she's spit it out and put her frog in her arms. She stops screaming for two seconds when I walk back into the room, so I know she's not upset beyond reason but then it's like she wants me to know how pissed off she is that I just left her there and she starts up again with renewed vigor. Her hysteria is not as bad as it was at the beginning but it's really getting to me. Why, WHY did God create babies unable to sleep on their own without help??

My baby, doing what she does best

Okay, enough of my woe-is-me story.

Do I think education is important? Yes! I think I'm one of those lucky people who really enjoy learning (depends on the subject, of course!). I found that the longer I stayed in school, the more I enjoyed it. I liked CEGEP better than high school, my undergrad better than CEGEP and my Masters better than my undergrad. I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that the class sizes get smaller and the subject becomes more focused. So instead of Intro to Christianity, you can study Paul's Letters or Covenants and Promises in the Hebrew Bible.
Anyhow, even though my degrees have not guaranteed me employment, having these degrees on my CV will never be a bad thing, only a good thing. Right away you're accorded a certain degree (no pun intended) of respect when you say you have [insert degree here]. People know it's hard work and takes time and patience to complete any degree or certificate. It speaks to your perseverance, ambition, work ethic, smarts... the list goes on.
Of course, the obvious bonus of education is intelligence! You learn all sorts of great stuff! You learn how to read and write, which is simply communication! Communicating your thoughts and ideas and understanding other people's thoughts and ideas. This means you're a little less ignorant and I think we all can agree that the world can use a lot less ignorance! And I don't know if this is true for other people but I found that the more I learned, I realized how much I didn't know. Rather than make my head bigger, getting an education made me humble. There are a kajillion people out there studying and learning a kajillion things. There's always going to be someone somewhere who can teach you something. It's pretty amazing.
To be clear, I think ALL education is important, whether it be kindergarten, trade school, ministry, how to tie your shoes or learning to drive a car. Whatever you learn, whatever your education consists of, it all means something, it all adds something to who you are and how you live your life.

Hey... do you hear that? Me neither! Ahhh... blissful silence. My baby has finally fallen asleep!
