Day Sixteen: My Views on Mainstream Music

Day 16 of the 30 Day Writing Challenge

Day Sixteen: My Views on Mainstream Music

I'll try to make sure this post is somewhat coherent. Our 6 month old would not sleep last night. We still don't know what it was. Something she ate? How much she ate? Teething? Attachment issues? Who really knows! When hubby got up for work I shuddered internally because I knew the day was about to begin and who wants to go through any day with so little sleep? The worst part is that Baby Girl will go down for a nap almost two hours after waking up and by that time I've gotten a burst of energy so instead of napping with her, I bustle about the house trying to get as much done as possible.

Anywho, on to the challenge!

Once again, I've addressed this topic in previous posts. I guess I should pay more attention to the list before blogging about any given topic!

I only began listening to Christian music a couple of years ago. Before that I listened to 99.9 The Buzz, an alternative rock music station and when there were commercials, I would switch over to CHOM 97.7, more of an old school rock station. Before that I would listen to Mix 96, which is now Virgin 96. This is your quintessential pop music station that replays the same trendiest songs of the moment ten times within one hour.

I still enjoy music from The Buzz but I don't think I can ever go back to listening to pop music. After listening to Christian music and actually paying attention to the words, it's a shock to listen the words of pop music. A lot of it is just bubblegum, cotton candy type stuff. But a lot of it is crass and offensive. On top of which the melody is the same chord over and over. Or one word is repeated over and over.

Now that I have a kid of my own, I'm much more aware. Music is one such awareness. Kids soak everything up like sponges. They have incredible memories and aptitudes for memorization. Do I really want my kid singing songs about being a Promiscuous Girl? Or would I rather her sing about being free to be herself?

Luckily I've got a little time before she demands control over the radio dial or more probably when she has the latest version of the iPod and is listening to everything I don't want her to listen to. Now I just have to get through Elmo's Song...
