Under the Weather

My poor daughter seems to be getting a cold. Last night her nose was stuffed up and she was having difficulty breathing while nursing and when I put her soother in. At first I thought it was because she had been crying a lot (she's a fussy baby when it comes to bedtime) but when she woke up at 1am and I went in I could hear her still having trouble. This morning she has a runny nose and she still seems to have trouble breathing through her nose. She also has a dry cough. I feel so helpless! There's not a lot you can do besides elevate her crib mattress, put a humidifier in her room and give lots of cuddles. It's one thing when you're sick and you know how you're feeling and what you want or need. It's another thing when your 5 month old is under the weather and you have no idea what she wants or needs. I wish I could make sure she never suffered, from illness, from heartache, from frustration, from whatever! I guess this is part of what parenting is about.
