Phonephobia

The telephone is a great invention. No doubt about it. The only problem is I hate using the phone! The only people I don't mind talking on the phone with are my husband, my immediate family and close friends. Otherwise, I loathe answering the phone. I dread calling strangers. Maybe it's because I can't see their facial expressions so I can't tell if they're mad/sad/glad. It's so much easier to know how to approach the conversation if you can gauge their mood. You might say, what difference does it make? You need something from them and it's their job to help you. What you say is true! Nonetheless, I can't help my feelings. I avoid making phone calls. Sometimes I'll force myself to make a call. Say, calling the bank for something. In the end, everything turns out well and I feel silly for being nervous about it. But the next time I have to call someone, the anxiety returns. I guess I am a visual person and a voice at the other end doesn't cut it. Did you know there's actually a phobia called phonephobia or telephobia?? It's extreme fear of using the phone. I wouldn't say I have an extreme fear but maybe I have a mild case? My hubby teases me about it or rolls his eyes when I ask him to make a call for me. I don't blame him! He doesn't understand and frankly, neither do I! Thank goodness for automated phone services! There's nothing like hearing a computer giving you options to choose from. Or answering machines! There's nothing better than hearing that *beep!* and leaving a message! Unfortunately, some calls must be made and leaving a message won't cut it. Here's to sucking it up and making the call!
